LOYALISTS HARD PRESSED
Rebel Advance In Northern Spain
“NO SURRENDER” PARTY IN GIJON (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 15, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 14. ' The Spanish Government frankly admits that the situation in the Asturias province is critical, and adds: “The last act in the northern drama has begun; it will be Shakespearean in its tragedy.” The Government’s offensive in Aragon, however, has been successful. All objectives near Saragossa have been captured.
A broadcast from Oviedo, based on disclosures by refugees from Gijon, alleges that Ballamino Tomas, Communist dictator, imprisoned 3000 persons, mainly old men, women and children of anti-militarist families, on hulks moored to munition dumps at Portmusel. Several were killed in aerial bombardments.
The reign of terror in Gijon is becoming intensified. The “no surrender” element is in full charge and is rounding up all moderates. The belief that a submarine was sunk off Cartagena appears to be without foundation. Loyalist divers discovered nothing.
