Fifty Years Ago Today
(From the Southland Times) AUGUST 25, 1887 Fire at Riverton.—The old native school house on the Maori reserve at Riverton was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. The building had not been used for some time past and had been announced as for sale for removal. Incendiarism is strongly suspected. Invercargill Athenaeum Committee.— The ordinary meeting of this committee was held yesterday evening, there being present Messrs J. Feldwick (president), Smith, R. Tapper, Perkins, McLean, Mair, Bennett and Laine (secretary). On the motion of Mr Smith it was decided to discontinue taking Tlie Lancet, The Mark Lane Express and The European Mail. The president said he had been informed that the institution had lost several subscribers owing to the fact that no Irish Home Rule paper was to be found on the tables. The secretary was authorized to make inquiries and ascertain which paper’of this class it would be most advisable to order. Volunteer Parade.—A Government inspection of the G Battery took place yesterday evening, under Major J. J. Atkinson. Besides the inspection in the Garrison Hall the men were, marched through the principal town streets, the band playing appropriate military airs as they led the way.
