THE SUB-UNION MATCHES

EASTERN DISTRICT GORE TEAMS LEAD IN COMPETITION The overhead conditions were fine for the continuation of the Eastern Southland Rugby football competition matches, but a strong wind made it difficult for the teams. At Gore, Pioneer beat Wyndham and at Mataura,.Albion beat the home side. Pioneer and Albion are now tire competition leaders and Mataura and Wyndham are second equal. PIONEER v. WYNDHAM At the Gore show grounds, Pioneer beat Wyndham by 14 points to 11 after

a ragged game. Crawford had a day out for Pioneer and scored all of its 14 points (three tries, one conversion and one penalty goal). The ground was in fair order and. at times the teams showed some clever movements, but these were seldom and the play was mostly very ragged. Crawford was the outstanding back on the field and had too much pace for the opposing players. McKenzie also played well, and McLennan was always sound for Wyndham. The teams were: PIONEER (red and white).—Mattingly; Newman, Crawford, Sizemore; McKenzie, Tutty; Taylor; forwards, Scott, Cooper, Robins, Ritchie, McKinlay. Mathieson, Ford, Russell. WYNDHAM (blue).—D. Crosbie;McCaughan, McKelvie, McKay; F. Crosbie, McLennan; Patrick; forwards, W. Smith, Milburn, Eggleton, Pow, R. McKay, Glover, Benneworth, A. Smith. Mr L. T. Cockerill was the referee. THIRD GRADE At the Gore show grounds Albion and High School drew, 9 points all, after a very evenly-contested game.

Playing also at the show grounds, Pioneer beat Menzies Ferry by 3 points to nil. FOURTH GRADE Mataura scored an easy win over Pioneer by 29 points to 6 on the Gore show grounds. ALBION BEATS MATAURA GAME WON IN LAST FEW MINUTES Playing at Mataura on Saturday, Albion beat Mataura by five points to nil. The day was fine and the ground in good order, but a strong easterly wind spoilt what otherwise would have been an interesting match. The score gives a fair indication of the trend of play. In the first half Albion played a forward game, but in the second half it

made plenty of use of its backs, and only the deadly tackling of the Mataura team kept the score down. Mataura played against the wind in the first half in which neither side scored and it was thought that, with the wind in its favour in the second half, it would put up a good score. Had Albion not opened up play in the second half Mataura would possibly have won. The forwards were fairly evenly matched but the Albion backs were definitely superior. The teams were: Albion.—Dunnett, Milne, Morrison, Hoffman, Wyeth, Wallis, Ussher, Henderson, Murdoch, McDonald, Stark, Keown, Southern, Cuttriss, Stewart. Mataura.—Scobie, McConnell, Heaps, McCaughan, Leitch, Adam, Wyeth, Renshaw, Clark, Adam, COster, Sharp, Gaudion, Davies, McGowan. Mr R. A. Marshall was referee. JUNIOR MATCH In the junior match Mataura third grade v. Edendale, Mataura won by 31 points to 3.
