GATHERING OF PIPERS
Annual Competitions Opened ENTRIES FROM MANY PLACES Pipers from many places in the North Island and all over the South Island competed in the Invercargill Piping Competitions Society’s fourth annual gathering, which was opened in the Victoria hall’ yesterday. Big audiences both in the afternoon and the evening, saw a series of closely-contested events of a high standard. Exhibitions of Highland dancing and items by the Invercargill Boys’ Band added variety to the programme. There were 120 entries, compared with 102 last year.. The programme was well organized and there were no delays between the events. The results are as follows:— YOUTHS’ COMPETITION Marches. First prize, £2; second, £1 5/-; third, 15/-; fourth, 10/-; fifth, 5/-. Winner receives cup given by N. J. M. Rein Ltd., also a gold medal given by Mr A. P. Gerrard, Lady Barkly:—lan Dow (Balclutha) 211Jpts 1; John Gold (Balclutha) 210Jpts 2; J. Waddell (Kennington) 210pts 3; Miss M. Doyle (Timaru) 209pts 4; Bruce McKinley (Pukiti) 200pts 5. Nine competitors. The special prize of £ll/-, given by Mr John Watt, awarded to the most correctly dressed competitor, was won by Miss M. Doyle. A silver medal, given by Mr G. Hastie, Ferndale, to the youngest competitor, was awarded to D. K Boyle (Greymouth). Class C Amateurs (marches). First prize, £2 10/-; second, £1 15/-; third, £1 5/-; fourth, £1; fifth, 15/-; sixth, 10/-. Winner receives the Soutmand Sports Trust Cup and a gold medallion given by Mr W. A. Brown (Inver-, cargill):— John Gold (Balclutha) 223pts 1; Bruce McKinley (Pukiti) 218pts 2; Cecil Hayes (Waimatuku) 218pts 3; J. C. Sutherland (Mataura) 218pts 4; lan Dow (Balclutha) 215’>pts 5; G. Stalker (Ermedale) 214pts 6. Nineteen competitors. McKinley, Hayes and Sutherland tied, but were placed on points for execution as follows: —McKinley 881, Hayes 84, Sutherland 83J. A special prize of £1 1/-, given by Mr T. M. Pankin, awarded for most correctlydressed competitor, was won by K. Boyce (Christchurch). STRATHSPEYS AND REELS. First prize, £2; second, £1 5/-; third, 15/-; fourth, 10/-. Winner receives cup given by Mr J. L. McG. Watson, also gold medal given by Mr J. M. West (Browns). K J. SLOW AIRS. First prize, £2 10/-; second, £1 10/-; third, £l. N. Stratton (East Taieri) 248pts 1; Eric J. Parker (Timaru) 246pts 2; Miss Helen Clothier (Hamilton) 238pts 3. Eleven competitors. A special prize for dress was awarded N. Stratton.
