WIDOW CONDEMNS MEMORIAL
LADY HAIG’S ATTITUDE TO STATUE OF HUSBAND
(Received June 17, 11.30 p.m.)
LONDON, June 17. When the national memorial to FieldMarshal Earl Haig is unveiled at Whitehall towards the end of the year his widow will not be present. “I do not like the statue,” Lady Haig told The Daily Mail. “The horse is monstrous. They have also depicted my husband with a scroll in his hand: this is ridiculous, as he always carried a map. I am sure I am acting as my husband would have wished; he would never have approved the statue.” Lady Haig’s decision follows eight years of controversy about the design of the memorial.
