THE WEATHER COLD AND CHANGEABLE

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, June 17. Following is the special weathei forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington: Moderate to strong,, but later decreasing, southerly winds. Weathei cold and changeable, with passing showers, mainly in coastal areas, but improving. Seas moderate to rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather still unsettled, with rain at times in most districts and some snow on the ranges. Temperatures cold, improving tomorrow, however, especially in the western districts and the southern portion of the South Island. General Situation.—An extensive depression of moderate intensity covers the New Zealand area, its centre being located west of the North Island. It is slowly moving eastwards and an anticyclone is now situated over Eastern Australia. Winds.—Westerly at first north of Kawhia and Tauranga and between Hawke’s Bay and East Cape, backing soon to south-westerly; elsewhere southeasterly to southerly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and rising at times to gale force in the Cook Strait area. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough about Cook Strait, elsewhere moderate, but rising on the west coast of the North Island and south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong southerly winds, with moderate to rather rough seas.

The weather in Invercargill was cold and wet yesterday. Rain started to fall early in the day after a sharp frost and showers fell at intervals during the afternoon and evening.
