OHAI RAILWAY BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Ohai Railway Board was held in the Boardroom, Wairio recently. Mr L. S. Edmond (chairman) presided. The following members were present: Messrs G. Edie, E. Davis, G. Tinker, D. D. McDonald, W. Crawford, and W. Excell. The general manager (Mr A. W. Rodger) and traffic manager (Mr RDonnelly) were also in attendance. The general manager’s report stated: “The output of coal since last meeting of the board was affected by the King’s BBirthday. Last year this holiday fell on June 23, in consequence of which our comparisons are upset. As stated in my last report, the holidays which were observed on May 12 (Coronation Day) and May (May Day) were ‘off days’ not previously held. These happenings have resulted in a decrease of 2169 tons in the quantity of coal hauled during the first 11 weeks of the financial year—when compared with the same period last year. As the demand for coal seems to be steady the likelihood is that this deficit in haulage will now gradually be overtaken. “The statement appearing in The Southland Times resulting from a letter addressed to the Hon. Adam .Hamilton, MJP., by the Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), indicates that the information furnished to Mr Sullivan during and after his visit to Southland, has satisfied him that the board and the coal owners have acted reasonably in the road transport of coal.”

The report was adopted. The traffic manager reported: “‘The gang has cut and pointed a number of iron rails and driven these down into the papa, at the foot of the cutting near the overhead bridge on No 2 section to prevent threatened slips at that point The wall built up behind the rails appears to be effective as no further movement of the ground is noticeable. The required resleepering of sidings at Ohai has been carried out during the month.” The report was adopted.
