PRINCESS CARNIVAL

OPENING THIS AFTERNOON The Princess Carnival, which is being held to raise funds to enable Southland’s four selected basketball representatives to travel to Australia early next year with the New Zealand team, will be opened this afternoon in the Victoria hall by the Mayor (Mr John Miller). No effort has been spared by the basketball players of Invercargill to make the function a success and the Southland Union hopes that the public will give the carnival the support it deserves.

Well-laden stalls will carry a variety of plain and fancy goods at reasonable prices, while entertainments will be provided during the evenings by the pupils of the Southland Girls’ High School and Technical School and by members of the American School of Tap Dancing. This afternoon a baby show, for which post entries will be received, will be held in the following classes: Boys and girls six months and under and boys and girls one year and under two.

In addition a baking competition will be held, with the following classes:— Plate each fancy biscuits, shortbread, oven scones, girdk scones, gems, pikelets; one each sponge sandwich, butter sponge, chocolate cake, light fruit cake, dark fruit cake.

Good prizes are offered—first, second and third in each section, except in sections where there are less than three entries when no second and third prize will be awarded. Post entries will be received for the baking competition. This evening the Boys’ Battalion Band will provide a programme of music, while the Pipe Band will lead the Grand Parade of basketbailers which will leave the comer of Gala and Dee streets for the Victoria hall at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the princess contest will be announced on Saturday evening.
