HEALTH CAMPS FOR CHILDREN
To The Editor Sir, —The letters by “Health First and Last” and “P” were rather interesting reading. “Casey’s” letter may not be so interesting but the answer to it certainly would be. Before the last election we heard those who are now our Cabinet leaders decrying the very health camps for which we have recently heard them appealing for funds. These donations are to be backed by the Government to the extent of thousands of pounds. Can any member or supporter of the Labour Government explain this change of front? “Casey” well remembers being told in all seriousness that the need of health camps was entirely the fault of the then Government which had reduced the workers’ wages to starvation point so that parents could not afford to keep their children sufficiently fed to be healthy. Give the workers a decent wage and there would be no need for health camps, etc. Now, after a year of “decent standard of living” we are to have camps—and permanent ones at that—costing no end of money. Are wages not high enough yet?—Yours, etc. CASEY. June 16, 1937.
