MEETING OF SUBUNION

The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Eastern Somhland Sub-Union was held last evening There were present: Messrs J. W. Aitken (chairman), A. H. Davidson, J. Cunningham, W. Forbes, N. McLeod, J. A. Edwards, H. G. Wallis, F. M. Murray. 5 A letter from the secretary of the North Otago Union stated that his union had again considered the matter of playing a match against Eastern at Gore, but it regretted that a visit would not be possible this year because of its team’s long absence in the North Island The matter would receive every consideration next year. The secretary of the Southland Union (Mr A. J. Hamilton) wrote stating that he had forwarded a football to thi Edendale school at the sub-union’s request. Mr Hamilton also requested that the sub-union forward to him the names of the various clubs, then colours and the numbers of teams play-' ing in each grade, as the particulars were required by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union. It was decided to forward the required information. A further letter from the Southland Union stated that it had been decided to play the annual Town-Country match at Rugby Park on July 3 The matter of a Town-Eastern match at Gore had been referred to the selectors for a report E. R. Brown was granted a transfer from the Pirates Club (Dunedin) to Albion. , . ~ Mr H. G. Wallis asked if it would not be possible to arrange some means of training for representative players. He was satisfied after . watching the game at Invercargill on Country Day that the Eastern players were not fit. Mr A. H. Davidson said he agreed with Mr Wallis’s views. The players showed up well for about 10 minutes and then appeared to crack up. . _ Mr J. A. Edwards said his opinion was that some of the forwards were not putting their weight into the scrums. “The players have not had a chance to get fit,” said Mr Davidson. “I think that there should not be any representative matches played before at least six club matches have been played. Several other members agreed with the previous speakers. Mr Wallis moved that the selectors make some arrangements about the representative team. The motion was carried. THE RETURNED SOLDIERS At the fortnightly meeting of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association there were present:—Messrs S. Paterson (president), F. M. Murray, J. McDonald, T. Rushbridge, A. C. Steel, M. Green, J. McQueen, E. J._Columb, J. Adams, C. M. Wilson, P. R. Stewart, G. L. Gerken. A motion of sympathy with Messrs J. D. and A. McLean, of Balfour, in the recent death of their sister, wat carried. One new member was elected to the association. The secretary reported that the financial membership, was 237, compared with 217 last meeting night and 198 at the same period last year. It was reported by the secretary that a further donation of £3O had been received from Mr Anonymous for the relief of distress among ex-soldiers and their families. . A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.
