PHOTOGRAPHS OF SOLAR ECLIPSE
SATISFACTORY DEVELOPMENT OF PLATES (Received June 16, 7.30 p.m.) APIA, June 15. Mr A. Michie, leader of the New Zealand solar eclipse expedition, reports that plates of the. eclipse have been developed and all are exceptionally good. The 19-ft. coronograph gives fine and extensive details of the corona. Seven prominences are noticeable, a striking one being 5500 miles above the sun’s limb.
The 78-in. camera plates show coronal streamers extending over 2,500,000 miles. The results from the rotating sector camera are satisfactory and show an idea worthy of development.
Mr Buddle has developed his plates of the birds; the majority are very good. He is now classifying his specimens of birds, crabs and shells from Canton Island. One petrel he has not yet been able to identify.
