REPORT ON DANGER* AT RABAUL
SCIENTISTS TO MAKE INQUIRY
(Received June 16, 7.30 p.m.)
SYDNEY, June 16. A message from Rabaul (New Guinea) states that the Administrator (Briga-dier-General W. R. McNicoll) has been informed that the Commonwealth Government contemplates obtaining the services of a qualified scientist, probably from the United States, to report upon volcanic and seismal danger at Rabaul. The Commonwealth will also appoint a committee of experts to examine the suitability of Rabaul as the future capital. A large section of the white population refuses to return to Rabaul, and a number of women refugees, before embarking for Australia, advised their husbands to resign their positions, which they contend is the official alternative.
