Rope knitting is one of the knitting patterns most in use at the present time. It is particularly popular for sports sweaters, where the broad cord has the most striking effect. For instance, just try the following: . Materials. Four-ply wool and thick knitting needles. Directions. Cast on 30 stitches. Row 1: purl 2, knit 12, purl 2, knit 12, purl 2. Row 2: knit 2, purl 12, knit 2, purl 12, knit 2. Alternate with these two rows until there are 6 in all. On tne 7th needle the 12 plain stitches are looped thus; the first 6 stitches are transferred to an auxiliary needle which is held behind the knitting; meanwhile the next 6 stitches are knitted, then knit the 6 stitches on the auxiliary needle. Looping takes place every 10 rows. Frequently rope knitting can be used to give knitted articles the required fit. For example, it is possible to give sleeves the fashionable breadth at the shoulders by merely letting a few rope-knitted ribs run up and down them, and then stopping the looping just before the shoulder is reached. Likewise, one can gather in the width of knitted gloves, which falls at the cuff portion, by making a couple of ropeknitted ridges on the back of the hand.
