FILM ACTOR’S WIFE Mrs Lloyd Hughes, the wife of the film actor, passed through New Zealand last week, en route from Hollywood to Australia, where Mr Hughes will play the male lead in a film with the New Zealand actress, Miss Elaine Hamill. Mrs Hughes will be remembered by many film-goers as Gloria Hope, an actress of the silent screen, when she played opposite Mary Pickford in the 1922 version of “Tess of the Storm Country,” as well as in many other pictures. She has now retired from screen life. Asked the method by which most actors and actresses became accepted for screen work, Mrs Hughes said the great majority were brought from the stage. Stage exeprience was a great asset to any film actor. “Talent scouts were employed by the various filmproducing companies to go to the East each season to see the new plays and were empowered to sign on any actor or actress whom they thought would be suitable for film work. Many were also taken from the Ben Bard Players, a company of amateur actors formed by Mr Ben bard, a former stage, vaudeville and film actor, while the Pasadena Little Theatre Society was also responsible for having contributed many personalities to the screen world.
