RIFLE SHOOTING

(By

BULLSEYE)

Although the weather was ideal and shooting conditions excellent, the entry for the King’s Birthday meeting which was run by the Southland . Rifle Association was very disappointing. Not one entry was received from the country clubs. A very pleasant day was spent by 25 competitiors from the city clubs and the standard of shooting was very good. The 363 yards match was won by W. D. Henderson of the Invercargill Club with the fine score of 49 after counting out A. E. Henderson (City Guards), who also shot well for 49. A. Lyall, J. Clark and S. L. Wall of the Invercargill Club also shot well for 48 each. Henderson’s diagram was as follows:— 300 yards.

In the 500 yards match, the young Invercargill marksman G. Wilson made no mistakes and placed his 10 shots well in the bullseye for a possible, the only one made at the meeting, and this won him the match. A. Ford, W. D. Henderson and R. M. Milley 49 each, and R. Ure, A. R. Wills, S. L. Wall, R. W. Henderson and B. Broomfield made 48 each. Wilson’s diagram is here shown:— 500 yards.

At 600 yards R. Ure won the A grade with 48 and was closely followed by W. Milley, W. Murray and A. Lyall with 47 each. The tyro was won by F. E. Broom with 48 after counting out J. Storrie who also shot well for 48. B. Broomfield also did well by making 47. The diagram of R. Ure, F. E. Broom and J. Storrie is as follows:— 600 yards.

The highest aggregate was made by W. R. Henderson whose total was 49-49-45=143. R. Ure and B. Broomfield were close up with 142 each, while A. Lyall, J. Clark, A. Ford and S. L. Wall made 141 each. The Invercargill Club fired the second competition for the Cunningham Memorial Cup last Saturday in very boisterous weather. The ranges were 500 and 600 yards, ten shots at each. A. Lyall, who has been showing much improved form of late, topped the list with 48-44=92, which was a very creditable score in the rough conditions.

His diagram at 500 yards was:—

J. Archer who is one of the clubs tyros shot well in the difficult conditions, and his 45-44=89 took him into second place. The final will be fired on Saturday at 300 and 600 yards. THE MINIATURE RANGE The Mossburn Miniature Rifle Club is already a very healthy body, and at its last weekly shoot it had a visit from Mr D. Davies, president of the Southland Miniature Rifle Association, and Messrs S. L. Wall, G. Wilson and R. Graham (Invercargill Club), J. Buttolph (City Guards) and J. Doake (R.SA.. Club). The presence of experienced riflemen at the shoots of these newly-formed clubs can have only one effect—that of improving the scoring. The Gorge Road Club held a successful shoot last week.
