THE PORT OF BLUFF

INCREASE IN TRADE REPORTED REVENUE SATISFACTORY A satisfactory increase in trade through the port and an improvement in revenue compared with last year was disclosed in reports presented at the monthly meeting of the Bluff Harbour Board last night. The secretary (Mr R. N. Porter) reported that the total receipts for the month were £4645 10/10 against £4355 2/4 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of £290 8/6. The receipts for the month of May for the current and the preceding year were: —

Excluding extraordinary revenue the net totals for receipts were:—l937, £33,456 15/10; 1936, £30,341 15/7. The expenditure for the month was £4073 5/8, against £2546 9/8 for May 1936. The principal items of expenditure were:—Stores and supplies, £1636 9/9; salaries and wages, £1520 0/3; superannuation, refund contributions, retired employees and subscriptions, £513 7/10; Southland League, £100; deposit on land, £100; Bluff Borough Council, £43 14/5; travelling expenses, £37 8/6; cartage, £2O 4/6; office expenses, £l7 15/10; insurance, £l5 3/9; sundry, £69 0/10; total, £4073 5/8.

“For the eight months of this financial year there is a balance of receipts over expenditure of £5192 12/11,” stated the report. “For the same period last year the balance of receipts over expenditure was £3777 15/11. After deducting special items not budgeted for, the total receipts amounted to £31,508, against estimated receipts of £27,881 for the eight months. This left an amount of £10,314 to come in during the next four months to reach the figure shown in the annual estimated revenue or an average of £2579 a month. The average for the past eight months has been £3939. , TOTAL EXPENDITURE Expenditure is being kept within the estimate. The total expenditure to May 31, 1937, was £28,264, of which £22,253 comes within the scope of the annual estimates and compares favourably with the estimated figure of £26,843 for the period of eight months of this financial year. “For the month of May 1937 the tonnage of cargo handled over the board’s wharves was 13,644 tons, against 18,003 tons for the corresponding month of last year, being a decrease of 4359 tons. As April 1937 showed an increase of 4652 tons over the previous year, the two months April and May practically balanced themselves and it was a case of different distribution of shipping over the period. The totals for May 1937 were made up as follows:—

“The principal lines of imports were: Fruit, 111 tons; sugar, 204 tons; timber, 196 tons; coal, 226 tons; artificial manures, 623 tons; motor spirit and kerosene, 1895 tons; sundries, 5206 tons. The exports were:—Cheese, 479 tons; fish, 25 tons; frozen meat, 1698 tons; hemp, 69 tons; milk products, 467 tons; oats and oat products, 415 tons; seeds, 51 tons; tallow, 80 tons; timber, 768. tons; wool, 376 tons; sundries, 755 tons.' “Compared with last year there was an increase in coastal imports of 2277 tons and in increase in overseas imports of 5396 tons or a total increase in imports of 7673 tons. There was an increase in coastal exports of 1427 tons and a decrease 'in overseas exports of 1074 tons or a total increase in exports of 353 tons over the 1936 totals. Total cargo shows an increase of 8026 tons over the 1936 totals.”

The harbour master (Captain N. B. W. Hazard) reported that the shipping arrivals at and departures from the port during May had been:—lnwards.— Three overseas vessels of 17,074 tons, six intercolonial of 9916 tons, 45 costal of 9246 tons, a total of 54 vessels of 36,236 tons. Outwards.—Two overseas vessels of 11,870 tons, six intercolonial vessels of 9916 tons, 36 coastal vessels of 9072 tons, a total of 44 vessels of 30,858 tons.

The above figures in comparison with the figures of the corresponding month of 1936 showed inwards an increase of 10 in the number of vessels, but a decreased tonnage of 15,412 net tons, and outwards an increase of three in the number of vessels, but of 17,816 net tons decreased tonnage. There were present Messrs W. A. Ott (chairman), W. B. Dixon, W. J. A. McGregor, C. S. Lbnguet, W. M. Norman, L. W. Spencer, and G. A. Wraytt.

INVERCARGILL MINIATURE CLUB The Invercargill Miniature Rifle Club fired the first round of a six-night cup and the third round of the J. Morrison Cup and the third round of the championship last night. Shooting off for last week’s trophy, A. Ford was the winner from J. Clark. The scores were below the average. The highest were:— J. COX BEATS RUMBERG (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. “King Kong” Cox beat Hal Rumberg by two falls to one in a solid wrestling contest tonight, Cox having the first fall recorded against him in New Zealand. The third round opened with rough tactics. Cox following two dumps and elbow jolts secured a fall with a press. Rumberg evened in the fifth round after a flying scissors off the ropes. He repeated it in the seventh round but lost his balance Cox gaining the decision with a press.
