BILLIARDS

SOUTHLAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

TWO INTERESTING GAMES Two further games in the Southland amateur billiards championship were completed last night at the City billiard parlour between A. McKenzit (Invercargill) and J. Procter (Otautau), and P. B. Barnett (Wyndham) and L. Kennedy (Wyndham). The winners were McKenzie and Barnett. They were both brilliant games, all players playing good billiards. In the first game McKenzie took the lead and maintained a small margin of points in his favour and reached the first 100 when Procter’s score read 70. McKenzie then played good billiards to make 75 points in three consecutive visits to the table. Procter then played rather cautiously and reached 197 when McKenzie scored the required total, 300. McKenzie’s best breaks of over 20 were 24, 26, 25 and 27, and Procters best was a 34. In the second game the two Wyndham players showed their ability. Barnett was first to get a break, this being a 50, 48 points being scored off the red ball. Kennedy then took a turn and made a break of 26 and followed it up with another fine break of 68 (the highest break of the series to date). Barnett, with small breaks, managed to get within a few points of Kennedy and at the half-way mark the scores read: Kennedy 156, Barnett 150. After this some good open play was witnessed and at the 200 mark there was only a difference of one point in favour of Barnett. They were still together at the 250 mark when Barnett forged ahead and won the game with an unfinished break of 18. The final score read: Barnett 300, Kennedy 273. Barnett’s best breaks of the evening were 50, 37, 39 and 21. Kennedy scored breaks of 26, 68, 24 and 26. With the completion of these two games McKenzie and Barnett are one pair for the semi-finals.
