40-HOUR WEEK SAID TO BE INDISPENSABLE

NEW ZEALAND’S EXAMPLE GENEVA, June 14. The International Labour Office has finished its debate on the 40-hour week for the New Zealand worker. The New Zealand Minister of Finance (Mr Walter Nash) said they had crucial problems before them: (1) What to do in the event of another slump. (2) What to do for the labour displaced by machinery. (3) How to help agriculture. He spoke laudatorily of New Zealand’s social legislation and gave details of the measures passed. The director (Mr Butler) said the satisfactory experiences of France, the United States and New Zealand showed that the 40-hour week was economically possible and socially indispensable. He emphasized the danger of waste involved in the present expenditure on armaments.
