CONFISCATION OF FISHING GEAR

SUMMONSES ISSUED AGAINST BUSINESS MEN (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15. Summonses have been issued against eight prominent Auckland business and professional men whose fishing gear, valued at about £l5O, was confiscated by the ranger following an allegation that they were fishing in the prohibited waters of Lake Roto Airi, about 11 miles from Turangi, at Easter. The cases have been set down for hearing at Auckland on July 2/ The actions will be defended. Lake Roto Airi has been prohibited to European anglers for eight or nine years. Following the confiscation of gear it was explained by A. Kean, conservator of fish and game at Rotorua, that under the regulation of the Department of Internal Affairs only Maori anglers were permitted to use the lake and they had to procure a permit unless they were members of the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe. It is thought to be the only lake in New Zealand where fishing rights arc restricted in such a manner.
