SALVATION ARMY DISMISSAL

COMMISSIONER MAPP GIVES REASON

GENERAL BOOTH ACCUSED OF UNFAIRNESS

(Received May 24, 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. Commissioner Henrik Mapp has issued a further statement declaring that the real reason for his dismissal from the Salvation Army was a letter to General Evangeline Booth on March 16 in which he requested to be allowed to retire on account of ill-health, and in which he referred to certain matters General Booth wished to keep secret. General Booth, in acknowledging the letter on March 17, said the contents were disturbing. He, as a result of conversations with General Booth, agreed to keep silent and she promised to facilitate his retirement as chief of staff with immediate furlough. She terminated the chief of staff appointment, but Commissioner Mapp contended this did not affect his rank as a commissioner or his status as an officer. There would have been no public scandal had not General Booth decided on disciplinary action on the basis of unproved and unadmitted allegations, said Commissioner Mapp. Salvation Army leaders conferred and it was decided not to made an official re joiner to Commissioner Mapp’s statement Commissioner Mapp adds that the writs, which were issued by a third party, related to a matter apart from his dismissal. The Daily Mall says that they were issued by Miss Peggy Laurie, a 42-year-old London dressmaker and a daughter of a late Salvation Army commissioner. She has known Commissioner and Mrs Mapp all her life.
