In Town And Out

Snow at Te Anau Six inches of snow had fallen at Te Anau last evening. The road up the Eglinton Valley to the Homer tunnel was clear and passable. It was a very clear moon-lit night in the Hollyford Valley. Summer Time Ends Summer time, which began on September 27 of last year, will end at'2 a.m. tomorrow morning, when clocks will be put back half an hour. Although the official time is 2 a.m., many householders will alter their clocks this evening before they retire. Home As It Is Today “Home is coming to be regarded as a filling station by day and a parking place by night,” said the Rev. Raymond Dudley, one of the speakers of a deputation which waited on the Wanganui City Council to protest at the tendency to permit cinema entertainment on Sundays. A Freak Potato A potato which had grown round the bone of a rabbit’s leg, was brought into The Southland Times office yesterday. The honour of growing this novelty, if man can claim any honour for nature’s handiwork, goes to Mr C. Lake, of Tussock Creek. Farmers’ Return The Southland farmers who toured the West Coast at the invitation of the West Coast executive of the Farmers’ Union returned to Invercargill by last evening’s express. “It was a most enjoyable trip,” remarked one of the party. “We were exceedingly well treated by the farmers on the West Coast and had a very good view of the scenic attractions. Several of us visited the Franz Josef glacier. The weather during the whole trip was very good.” Memorial of Appreciation It is the intention of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association to present to the Southland County Council a printed memorial of appreciation of the support given by the citizens of the county to the returned soldiers’ movement since its inception in 1916. The announcement was greeted with applause by members at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland County Council. The presentation will be made at a social evening in the R.S.A. club rooms on Wednesday evening. A Gracious Act Appreciation of a gracious act by visitors to the cairn which was erected at The Jollies in 1934 by residents of the district to mark the graves of four pioneer settlers was expressed to The Southland Times yesterday by Mr G. A. Hamilton, of Lumsden. The visitors’ book that had been placed in the cairn had been filled to overflowing, he said, and recently the sum of 3/4 had been left by visitors towards the cost of a new book. “It shows that the monument is appreciated,” he remarked, “and the leaving of this money is a very gracious act indeed. The donors can be assured that a new book will be provided.” Mayor’s Appeal to Minister

The Mayor (Mr John Miller) has appealed to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) to use his influence to see that Invercargill territorials who are to go into camp at Dunedin early next month are released in time to take part in the Coronation celebrations here on May 12. In a telegram sent. to the Minister yesterday the Mayor said: “Invercargill territorials will be in camp at Dunedin and will participate in the Coronation celebrations there I am most concerned that the defence authorities decline to release them for the Invercargill celebrations on Coronation Day. I would appreciate your help.”

Visit of Minister of Lands Further details of the visit to Southland of the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) were received yesterday from Mr J. Hargest, M.P. The Minister will arrive at the Lora Gorge school at 9.30 on Monday morning and spend an hour there. He will reach Forest Hill at 11.15, visit the Tamatea settlement at 12.30 p.m. and arrive at Winton at 1 p.m. Deputations will be heard after lunch. Mr Hargest is making the necessary arrangements over the week-end. The Minister has informed the Mayor (Mr John Miller) that he will receive deputations in Invercargill on Tuesday evening. He will be in the district all day Wednesday and will leave the following morning for Tawanui and Pounawea.
