ACUTE SHORTAGE OF ORANGES
RECORD PRICES IN DUNEDIN (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 23. The acute shortage of oranges resulted yesterday and today in prices for oranges soaring to unexpected heights, and the prices realized on the local market are believed to constitute a record for Dunedin. For 25 cases of oranges ex the Monterey, which were sold on the local market yesterday afternoon, the high price of 80/- was obtained for each case of 176 oranges, bidding being very keen throughout. Another consignment of 25 cases was submitted to auction this morning and for 176’s as high as 81/- was obtained. For cases containing 388 oranges £4 7/6 was obtained locally this morning, and cases of 200’s to 252’s brought from £4 to £4 5/-. Oranges are retailing at an exorbitant price, working out at just under 6d each for oranges of 176 to a case.
