NO SUPPORT FROM COUNTY COUNCIL

PROPOSED MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY The proposal to establish a museum and art gallery for the province of Southland in honour of the .centennial of New Zealand will not receive the support of the Southland County Council. Members considered the proposal at yesterday’s meeting, and unanimously decided that “Owing to the increased costs brought about by recent legislation, Government interference with the council’s revenues and being faced with the necessity of increasing the rates, the County Council cannot support the proposal.” It was decided to send a copy of the resolution to the Centennial Committee. In the schedule which had been prepared showing the suggested contributions by local bodies, based on an average of capital value and population, the Southland County Council’s contribution was fixed at £2198.
