COMPENSATING PRICE

‘‘SOUTHLAND WELL BEHIND” ATTITUDE OF FARMERS’ UNION The monthly meeting yesterday of the Southland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union decided to submit the following remit to the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Federation; “That this conference supports +he compensating price campaign, and that it elects two South Island representatives to act on the compensating price committee elected at Wellington on the occasion of the Dairy Board conference.” The secretary (Mr A. L Adamson), said that the campaign had been introduced for discussion at the recent conference of the dairy industry at Wellington. Several South Island delegates were present, but they had received no instructions and were not prepared to commit themselves. It had been decided that the industry would support the campaign to the extent of a levy of 4d on butter and 2d on cheese. It was understood that if the union submitted a remit to the South Island Dairy Association at Dunedin in June, it would be fully supported. Mr T. Major, chairman of the dairying committee, said mat he had just received a letter from Wellington which explained fresh action that had been decided upon. “Evidently we are well behind in this campaign oown here,” he said. “We do not know of the financial plans, and we are getting very little information.” The chairman (Mr G. A. Hamilton) : A lot of money has been raised in the North Island, but nothing has been done down here. Financial help is being given in the north by mercantile firms, freezing companies and dairy companies.
