AMERICAN LOSES ON FOUL

THRILLING BOXING AT SYDNEY (Received April 23, 1.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 22. At the Stadium tonight the Australian lightweight, Alf Blatch (9.11), received the decision on a foul in the fifth round against the American, Jimmy Leto (10.3). Ten thousand persons witnessed the encounter, which was thrilling while it lasted. Blatch, who was a substitute for Jack Carroll, piled up the points with ringcraft, skilful leading and effective lefts to the face and body. He had the crowd on its tiptoes. The American relied mainly on close range fighting and body punches. Early in the fifth round the referee warned Leto about low punches, one which sent Blatch sprawling; he took the count of nine, but rose and fought back with great spirit. When he was again floored by a kidney punch the fight was stopped and Blatch was declared the winner. Leto was vigorously hooted.
