WOMEN’S DIVISION

SOUTH HILLEND BRANCH The South Hillend Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a social afternoon recently to celebrate the fourth birthday of the Branch. Because of wintry conditions prevailing, several branches were unable to be represented. The president extended a hearty welcome to all present and especially to members of the Dipton and Winton branches and the Limehills Institute who came at great inconvenience. A short programme of vocal and instrumental items and dancing was contributed by the following:—Pianoforte solo, Miss A. Langford; vocal duet, Mrs W. Langford and Miss B. Wilson; accordion solo, Miss G. Taylor; vocal solo, Mrs J. Kean; violin solo, Miss L. Hazlett; Irish jig, Miss Margaret Kirkwood; ballet dance, Misses A. and J. Langford, E. Ewan, L. Clarke, and M. Boyle. The accompaniments were played by the Misses A. Langford and N. Crowe, the music for the dancing being supplied by Mrs Dykes. At the conclusion of the programme afternoon tea was dispensed and the president called on Mrs J. Langford to light the four candles on the birthday cake. '’Congratulations were then extended by Mrs T. S. Smith, who assisted in the formation of the branch and who is always a very welcome visitor; Mrs Smart on behalf of the Winton branch; Mrs Lindsay on behalf of the Dipton branch and Mrs W. Woods, Limehills Institute. During the afternoon the president referred to the generous assistance given by Miss N. Crowe during the year and on behalf of the branch presented her with some beautiful china. The following were the winners of the competitions:—Musical competition: Miss E. Hazlett 1, Mrs R. King (Winton) 2. Lucky cup: Mrs Lindsay (Dipton). Lucky number: Mrs W. Boyle. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Murphy for donating the birthday cake.
