SOUTHERN DISTRICT SUB-UNION RETIREMENT OF MR A. McCallum (By “Dingersfontein”) The “Grand Old Man” of Southern District Rugby, Mr Archibald McCallum, of Gorge Road, has retired from the executive of .he Southern District Sub-Union after serving for no fewer than 15 years continuously on that body. His active participation m the game dates back a long lime before that as he was one of the very first players when the game was introduced there, before the Sub-Union was constituted. When the Kapuka Club registered their pre-war win in the Invercargill second grade banner competition, the genial “Archie” was to be found in the front row. That he has had a considerable influence in furthering the game in the south-east cannot be denied, and the fact that he was still hooking the ball from his opponents at the age of 42 is worthy of favourable mention. One occasionally sees father and son playing in the same team, though not often, but Mr McCallum has played with five sons, Jim, Jack, Stanley, Leslie and Neil, also one son-in-law, A. Johnstone. On the one occasion when Southern drew with Central he was selector. Though now giving up his seat on the executive of the Sub-Union, he is still associated with the Gorge Road Club and his encouragement and advice should be highly valued by that club, especially among the younger players who should do their best to draw the maximum benefit from his long and varied experience and mature judgment. With only three junior clubs entered this year the Southern District Sub-Union decided to raise all to senior status, thus making a total of ten teams in the competition. However, with the formation of a club at Waimatua the situation is open to review as they would ordinarily rank, at least in the first season, as juniors. It is understood that the Southern SubUnion is willing to accept their entry subject to the consent of the Southland Union. As this approval is practically certain, it would seem to open the way to the continuance of a junior competition as in the last few years.
