MEETING HELD Mr A. C. Steel presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Gore Returned Soldiers Association which was held in the club rooms. There were present Messrs W. D. Shelton, T. Fyfe, A. L. McDowell, T, Rushbridge, J. Adams, M. Green, J. McDonald, P. R. Stewart, C. M. Wilson, F. M. Murray, and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Votes of sympathy were carried with Mr W. F. Reynolds in the recent loss of his mother, with the relatives of the late Mr R. Kirkpatrick, of Wellington, and with Mr J. C. Cameron, of Tapanui, in the recent loss of his sister. The secretary reported that at the close of the financial year on March 31 the membership of the association stood at 575 compared with 551 at the same period last year. Major A. D. Reid, 0.C., E Squadron, Otago Mounted Rifles, wrote accepting the invitation to the squadron to take part in the Anzac Day services. The general secretary, Wellington, wrote about the 21st anniversary of the association, stating that the addresses to be presented to the Mayors of the chief towns would be forwarded at an early date. It was decided to present the address to the Mayor of Gore at a function on April 29 and to invite the councillors and public. Mr W. D. Shelton, who has been treasurer of the Gore association for 21 years, was appointed to make the presentation. It was also decided that addresses be forwarded to the Mataura and West-Otago sub-associations for presentation to the Mayors of Mataura and Tapanui respectively. The appointment of speakers for the Anzac Day functions was left in the hands of a sub-committee. RUGBY FOOTBALL The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Eastern Southland Rugby Football Sub-Union was held last evening. There were present: Messrs F. M. Murray (chairman),’ I. W. Martin, H. G. Wallis, J. Cunningham, A. H. Davidson, J. M. Boyne, F. Wallis, jun., N. McLeod. The Edendale town clerk (Mr W. L. Norton) wrote advising that the subuhion would be granted permission to charge admission to the domain grounds on six days during the season. The board was conscious of the fact that the area would require some prepara, tion to meet the sub-union’s requirements and no charge would be made for the use of the grounds. A letter w;as received from the secretary of the Mataura Domain Board (Mr T. K. Fisher) advising that permission would be granted to use the domain grounds at Mataura during the season, on the same terms as last year, and to charge admission on six days. The following transfers were granted: J. Bruhns, Waipiata to Albion; R. E. Lavender, Southern Club, Dunedin, to Pioneer; A. R. Dutton, Little River, to Pioneer; G. A. Russell, Alambhra, Dunedin, to Pioneer; R. C. S. Bates, Wanganui, to Pioneer; J. Henderson, Zingari Richmond, Dunedin, to Pioneer; W. Smith, Albion to Pukerau; ,W. Henderson, Pioneer to Mataura; H. Herbertson, Pirates, Dunedin, to Mataura; D. Fitzgerald, Cave, South Canterbury, to Pioneer. It was decided to send a junior team to Winton to play a Central junior team on June 5. It was decided to adopt the old “kick into touch” rule for this season. HIGH SCHOOL EX-PUPILS The annual meeting of the Gore High School Ex-Pupils’ Association was held last evening when Mr W. Chatterton presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report stated:—The principal point of contact between the association and the school during, the year was the farewell to the retiring rector, Mr Joseph Hunter, and the welcome of the new rector, Mr E. H. W. Rowntree. The annual reunion dinner gave the ex-pupils an opportunity of expressing a personal farewell to Mr Hunter and the executive was pleased to find that the function was well supported. The annual dance was postponed because of counter-attractions and it was hoped that the function would be revived this year. The association continued its remembrance of ex-pupils killed at the war by placing a wreath on the memorial gate at the hostel. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £29 5/2. adopted. ' The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr J. Hunter; president, Mr W. Chatterton; vice-presi-dents, Messrs E. H. W. Rowntree and E. C. Smith; secretary, Miss G. Marshall; committee, Messrs J. Corcoran, H. Belsham, J. Glasson, H. T. Smith, R. Proctor and Misses J. Paterson, C. Currie, F. McGoldrick, M. Moore, M. McLeod and G. Stewart. Misses M. McLeod, J. Paterson, and M. Moore were appointed to collect information for the school magazine. It was decided to leave the matter of the annual reunion dinner in the hands of the committee. CROQUET In the junior championship singles of the Gore Croquet Club, Mrs R. P. Neale beat Mrs J. Richards in the final by a small margin. The club’s competitions for the season have now been completed. GOLF The draw of the Gore Golf Club for an eclectic match to be played on Saturday next is as follows, fours to be arranged at the links:—McCaughan v. Turnbull; N. Young v. Cormack; Feast v.
