Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times)

APRIL 21, 1887

First Church Debating Society.—’Hie fortnightly meeting of the association was held in the hall, Ythan street, yesterday evening, when a fair number of members was present. After some routine business, Mr Erskine read a paper on “Commercial Morality.” The subject evoked considerable discussion, and was warmly taken up by a large number of those present, among whom were several prominent business men. A number of new members were proposed, and the meeting closed with the ’usual devotional exercises.

A Lively Time.—A scene unprecedented in the annals of the Invercargill Borough Council occurred at the meeting of that body yesterday evening and is reported in another column. It will fc . seen that one councillor assaulted another, and that subsequently the other members expressed strong opinions upon the occurrence.

Lindhurst Road Board.—A meeting of this board, held at noon yesterday, was attended by the chairman (Mr A. Kinross) and Messrs James Miller, W. Halliday, L. Grieve, William Irvine, John Irvine, T. Much and R. M. McCallum. John Kirkland’s application for permission to lay down a tramway from Mill road east, through Myross Village, was granted, subject to the supervision and consent of the Myross Committee. A ratepayer in the Myross subdivision drew the attention of the board to a part of the road which suffered from an overflow of water in wet weather, and suggested that a ditch be made through his land to carry it away, half the cost of which he would pay himself. It was resolved to inform him that the board would not undertake any new works at present. The clerk was instructed to sue for all rates outstanding after May 1. The meeting was then adjourned.
