NEW ZEALANDERS REACH LONDON

Military Contingent To Coronation

EXCITED CROWD’S WELCOME

KHAKI RECALLS SCENES OF WAR TIME

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright)

(Received April 20, 1.20 a.m.) LONDON, April 19.

Despite its early arrival a large crowd welcomed the New Zealand military contingent to the Coronation at Tilbury. The khaki uniform and red-banded hat revived war time memories. The disembarkation was carried out without a hitch.

A large crowd gathered at St. Paneras station, and excited men and women rushed forward, several women attempting to embrace the men despite the efforts of the police. After a minute’s scramble the New Zealanders managed to line up, and were welcomed by the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr W. J. Jordan) in an impromptu speech from the platform. This was followed by three terrific cheers, and then the troops moved off, headed by the Grenadier Guards Band, to march past a beflagged and garlanded New Zealand House, where Mr Jordan took the salute from the balcony.
