MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS At the monthly meeting of the management committee of the Southland branch of the .New Zealand Education Institute the following members were present: Messrs F. N. R. Downard (president, in the chair), E. Hargest (vice-president) G. F. Griffiths (secretary), C. N. Lawless, T. B. Heydon, J. W. Lopdell, J. Cutt, A. Kinross, H. P. Bryant, A. A. Cook, H. D. Gazzard, J. A. Cushen and L. J. Clapp and Misses E. B. Pay, M Baird and J. MacGregor. The retiring president (Mr J. W. Lopdell) welcomed Mr Downard to the chair. He said he hoped members would give Mr Downard the same loyal support that he himself had received during hi sterm of office. In reply,_ Mr Downard welcomed to the committee those new members who had just been elected. He said he hoped that in this vitally important year of educational reorganization the branch would prosper and do much good in the cause of education. A motion of sympathy with Mr J. Cutt and his family in the loss of his father was carried in the customary manner. A letter was received from Major D. F. Leckie thanking the branch for its congratulations on his inclusion in the New Zealand military contingent for the Coronation. Major Leckie said he hoped that as well as fulfilling his military duties’he might have some chance of seeing some of the overseas educational methods.

The provincial ballot to select representatives to the annual meeting of the institute in Wellington resulted as follows: Messrs J. W. Lopdell, J. A. Cushen and A. Thomson and Miss M. Baird.
