Dipton FARMERS’ UNION

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dipton Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday. There was a fair attendance. Mr D. McDonald presided. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance of £6 16/1. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr D. McDonald; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Scott and R. A. Palmer; secretary, Mr J. Milligan; treasurer, Mr W. Nevin; auditor, Mr R. A. Palmer; delegate to conference, Mr W. J. Martin.

After some discussion it was decided to write to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) requesting that the road from Dipton to Castlerock Siding be reinstated a main highway. The reasons advanced were:—(l) It was the shortest route to the Eglinton Valley from Invercargill. (2) During the recent Easter holidays the traffic was very heavy at times there being continual streams of cars. The Queenstown-In-vercargill bus service, as well as the car traffic to Queenstown, was also using this road. (3) A portion of the Caroline-Josephville-Lumsden Road was not safe for two-way heavy traffic, which tended to divert motorists to the Dipton-Castlerock road. It was decided to hold the next meeting of the branch on May 7. Mr Kingston, organizer for the union, was to be irvited to be present. An invitation was extended to the members of the Women’s Division to supper on this occasion. Mr Harris, provincial secretary for the Young Farmers’ Club was present and gave a short talk on the aims and objects of the club. After some discussion a small committee was set up to assist in forming a branch of the club in Dipton.
