Tuturau WOMEN’S DIVISION

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Tuturau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in Tuturau Hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs N. Marshall presided over a good attendance of members. A competition for apple jelly was won by Mrs J. Johnston; and Mesdames Townsend _ and Humphries tied for first place in a guessing competition (names of flowers). During the afternoon Mrs Christie on behalf of the members made a small presentation to Miss Ina Muir who is shortly to be married. Miss Muir made a suitable reply. A dainty afternoon tea was served. PRESENTATIONS A large gathering of Tuturau and district residents met at the Tuturau Hall recently to pay tribute to Mr D. Collie. The evening was spent • in cards and dancing, the music being supplied by Miss C. O’Rourke and Mr J. Collie. Messrs T. Burgess and A. Blair were masters of ceremonies. At a suitable interval Mr W. Muir, on behalf of the residents of Tuturau, asked Mr Collie’s acceptance of a well-filled purse as a mark of the esteem in which he was held in the district. Mr Muir specially mentioned Mr Collie’s willingness to help with the music at any of the socials or dances held in the district, and concluded by wishing him a prosperous married life. Mr Ward also spoke of the many good qualities of their guest and wished him a successful future. Mr Roland Patrick on behalf of the Tuturau Tennis Club took the opportunity of thanking Mr Collie for his services to the club and asked him to accept a small present from the members. _ ~ , Mr Collie made a suitable reply. On Wednesday evening a social was held in the Tuturau Hall in honour of Miss Ina Muir who is shortly to be married. Dancing filled the greater part of the evening and at an appropriate interval Mr L. Humphries, on behalf of the residents of Tuturau presented Miss Muir with a chiming clock and asked her to accept also the best wishes of those present for a long ana happy married life. Mr Tunnicliffe, replying on behalf of Miss Muir, thanked the speakers for their kind remarks and all those present for their beautiful gift. Miss Muir also replied. The music for the dance was played by Mrs B. Dickie, Miss C. O’Rourke and Messrs D. and J. Collie. CARD EVENING The fortnightly dance and card evening run by the Pipe Band was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday evening. The hall was filled to overflowing. The music was played by Mrs W. McLeod and Mr W. Paterson was master of ceremonies. • Mr A. Chamberlain was the winner of the first prize at the cards, Mrs Lloyd being second and the consolation prizes were won by Mrs B. Ashly and Miss Scharfe respectively. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Mr B. Halliday and Miss Morton.
