SOUTHLAND UNION ANNUAL MEETING The twelfth annual general meeting of the. Southland Basketball Union was held last evening. Miss E. B. Pay presided over a good attendance of delegates. , In presenting the annual report and statement of receipts and expenditure, Miss Pay congratulated the union on the activities of the past season and the extensive growth of the sport in the province. The inauguration of a country day tournament had proved very successful, she said, and the union’s senior representative team had won the New Zealand championship at tire Dominion tournament in Christchurch. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Alterations to the constitution were discussed and approved. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patrons, Mrs R. S. Mclnnes and Mr J. A. Doig (reelected); president, Miss E. B. Pay; vice-presidents, Mrs T. Noble, Mrs B. Challis and Mr A. Kinross; secretary, Miss M. Shand; treasurer, Miss L. J. Hallamore (re-elected); non-playing members, Miss G. McKenzie, Miss M. Godward (re-elected) and Mr E. Service; playing members, Mrs H. Lemin and Miss Rachel Shepherd; auditor, Mr C. E. Bourne; first aid official, Mrs Bain Challis. Mrs R. S. Mclnnes was elected a life member of the union. It was suggested that a knock-out tournament be held on April 10, entries to close on Saturday, April 3, and that competition games start on April 17. Registration would close on April 7.

It was decided that an effort be made to raise funds by means of a carnival to be held at the end of June and that if sufficient money were not secured by this effort a levy be imposed on clubs. It was also decided to hold evening tournaments during the season and that the New Zealand Basketball Union be requested to make representations for the holding of a holiday to replace the holiday on June 3. MENZIES ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT The first annual report of the Menzies Basketball Association states (inter alia): “The Menzies Basketball Association had a very successful first season, eight clubs being affiliated, with fourteen teams in, the A and B grade competitions. In the A grade competition, with five teams competing, the experienced Seaward Downs and Mataura Island teams carried off the honours, but the standard of play of the newly-formed clubs ' improved as the season advanced, and it is evident that play will be more closely contested in the 1937 season Nine teams competed in the B grade competition, in which' Wyndham District High School and Seaward Downs showed their superiority, being winner and runner-up respectively. Seaward Down in the A grade and Wyndham District High School in the B grade are to be congratulated on their unbeaten record during the season. Seven teams competed in the June tournament held in Invercargill, where firstclass experience was gained through meeting outside teams. Two representative teams were entered in the Country Day tournament on July 18, and although they, did not finish among the leaders, they played some good games and did not disgrace the association. On August 8, two teams travelled from Invercargill to play our representative teams. Our A representative team was defeated by the Town second grade representatives, who gave a splendid exhibition of the game. The Bluff third-grade team was defeated by our representative B team after an interesting game. Evening tournaments were conducted throughout the season by the various clubs. The Menzies Cup, which was competed for in the A grade competition, was donated by the patron, Mrs J. L. McG. Watson (Invercargill), while the Seaward Downs Club presented a cup for the B grade. During the season the association was fortunate in having capable referees in each district. Messrs H. R. Rendall and H. P. Bryant are to be congratulated on passing the theory examination set by the New Zealand Basketball Association MAKAREWA CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Makarewa Basketball Club was held on Tuesday evening, Mrs E. Mortimer presiding over a fair attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, there being a credit balance of £37 10/-.

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Mrs E. Mortimer; secretary, Miss Mavis Lee; treasurer, Mrs Young; blub captain, Miss Linda Glennie; delegate to union, Miss Hutton. It was decided to enter second grade and fourth grade teams this season. , Opening day was fixed for April 3.
