LORD NUFFIELD’S GIFT
MAYOR RECEIVES CHEQUE The Mayor (Mr John Miller) has received the following letter from Lord Nuffield together with a cheque for £1650 for distribution among needy and deserving charities in the city and suburbs:— “On this, my fourth visit to New Zealand, it is my desire to make some further contribution to its charitable enterprises, and it appears to me, after considerable thought in consultation with Mr C. J. B. Norwood, that the manner in which I may most equitably do so is to seek the co-operation of the mayors of the cities, towns and districts concerned. “I am enclosing herewith a cheque for £1650, which I shall be grateful if you will distribute among the chari.ties which you consider to be the most needy and deserving in your city and suburbs. “While I am anxious that this distribution shall be made at your sole and absolute discretion, it is my wish that prior consideration may be given to such causes as crippled children, hospital and maternity work, and those suffering from such afflictions as blindness, deafness and dumbness.”
