Mataura FIRE IN STABLE

HORSES AWAY AT THE TIME About 9 o’clock on Friday evening fire broke out in a stable in Oakland . street. The building was owned by Mr ■ S. Sleeman and leased by Mr J. Junor. The brigade was quickly on the ( scene, but the fire had gained a strong hold and it was impossible to save the building. The dividing hedge was also . alight, but the outbreak there was quickly subdued by the brigade. A lean-to adjoining the stable was used as a garage by Mr T. McCormack. The car was garaged at the time, but was quickly removed by nearby residents. Fortunately Mr Junor had his horses away at the time, but a quantity of harness, chaff, etc., belonging to him was destroyed. The building was valued at £5O. There was no insurance. The cause of the fire is unknown. LODGE MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the 1.0.0. F. Lodge, No. 40, was held on Thursday evening. N.G. Brother J. Curtain presided over a good attendance of members. Medical accounts were passed for payment, and the nomination of officers took place. P.G. Bro. N. McLeod, Grand Lodge representative, intimated that he would be leaving on Friday, March 12, for Palmerston North to attend the Grand Lodge session. WAITANE INSTITUTE There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Waitane Institute which was held in the hall. Mrs A. W. Halliday presided. After the despatch of routine business Mrs Peart, of Waimumu, was introduced by the president and she subsequently gave a demonstration on her spinning wheel. This proved very interesting and she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Many members also took the opportunity of trying their hand at the machine. Several competitions were held, all finding many competitors. The results were as follows: Best article from a sugar bag, Mrs Dryden; best bloom, Mrs A. W. Halliday; jumbled place names, Mrs George Halliday. COUNCIL OF CHURCH-GOERS For some considerable time the need for some organization that would combine the fighting forces of the congregations of Mataura and the district has been keenly felt. With this end in view a meeting was held at the close of the church monthly united prayer meeting which was held in the Methodist Church on Thursday, there being a splendid attendance, fully representative of all the congregations. The Rev. A. T. Kent (Methodist) presided and outlined the aims and object of the meeting and, after the other ministers and several laymen had given their opinions, it was unanimously decided to form a Council of Christian Congregations to be composed of the minister of each congregation, with two of his office-bearers, to be elected by their congregation. The following office-bearers were duly elected: President, the Rev. C. A. Kennedy ; vice-presidents, the Rev. A. T. Kent, Captain Pauling, Pastor Hoffman and Mesdames I. Maslin and C. Hannabus; secretary and treasurer, Mr Charles R. Peck. PERSONAL Mrs Cummings, of Gore, is at present visiting her daughter, Mrs L. Johnston, Kana street. Mr and Mrs F. McCurdy, Karitane, are spending their annual vacation , with Mr and Mrs W. Piercy, Bums < Mr Nelson Napier, M.A., of Oamaru,' j has been appointed relieving master at < the Mataura School to replace Mr S. , Bringans, who has been transferred to ■ the Auckland district. Miss Ivy Nelson has arrived in Mataura to take up her duties as assistant-mistress at the Mataura School.
