MERINOES SELL WELL AT LONDON LONDON, March 5. At the wool sales 3302 bales were offered, including 2538 from New Zealand, and 2452 were sold. A small supply of Australian Merinos sold well at full rates. New Zealand greasy crossbred, “BH/J,” brought a top price of 18d and an average of 171 d. SHEEP SALeTaT TEKAPO PRICES POORER THAN LAST YEAR UMARU, March 7. Over 30,000 sheep were penned at the annual sale of up-country sheep which was held at Tekapo on Saturday. The bidding was very irregular and prices were below those of last year’s sale, though on a par with recent North Canterbury sales. The best price was for a line of 303 three-quarterbred ewe lambs from the Wolds station, which realized 33/2, one of the biggest prices paid for lambs this season. A line of 235 ewe lambs from the Mount Cook station realized 25/-. The sheep did not come forward in the best condition because of having to travel long distances. The bulk of the sheep went to the Canterbury Plains and Otago. One factor contributing to the drop in prices was that because of the wet season farmers down country were well stocked and not able to carry any more sheep. In the early part of the sale there were a number of passings, but the majority of these were disposed of by private treaty.
