BECOMING UNSETTLED (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, March 5. ■ Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate to strong northerly winds, backing later to westerlies or, in places, to south-westerlies. Weather becoming unsettled, with rain in western and coastal areas. Temperatures moderate. Following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather fair to fine in most parts, but cloudy at times in districts with a westerly aspect, and with rain gradually developing, more especially in the western and southern portions of the South Island. A cool night, but temperatures becoming gradually milder. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone now extends across the Tasman Sea on 1 to the Dominion, but a series of slight depressions is moving along its southern border and across southern New Zealand. Winds.— Southerly north of Nev/ Plymouth and Napier, elsewhere variable, with northerlies prevailing at first, but changing to westerlies and later, in places, temporarily to southwesterlies. Force strong at times in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas, but otherwise light to moderate. Seas.—New Zealand waters, becoming rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, and rather rough on the west coast of the South Island; elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea, light and variable winds in the northern portion, with slight seas; moderate to strong south-westerly to westerly in southern portions, with moderate to rather rough seas. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine and sunny. A cool wind blew from the south-west. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (steady) 29.60 in. Friday 29.86 in. Thursday 29.82 in.
