MATAURA PAPER MILLS
MINISTER IMPRESSED BY VISIT The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G- Sullivan, was greatly impressed yesterday with the substantial additions now being made to the New Zealand Paper Mills at Mataura. It was stated that the building additions, which are nearing completion, were estimated to cost the company over £150,000, The first portion of the works was erected in 1879, and the maximum output then was only 200 tons a year. Production had now grown to the substantial quantity of 9000 tons of paper, and when the present additions were completed the capacity would be over 14,000 tons. The employees at present numbered 232. The horsepower required to drive the heavy machinery was 4500 and capable of developing 7000. The works consumed 18,000 tons of New Zealand coal per annum. Forty different qualities of paper in various weights and" colours were manufactured and it was hoped shortly to add further classes of papers to this num-, ber.
