Miss J. Keasly, Orepuki, has been visiting Tuatapere. Miss J. Morris, Orepuki, has been visiting Te Tua. Mrs J. Fleck, Otaitai Bush, is staying with her mother, Mrs H. Stewart, Rimu.

Mr and Mrs Douglas, of Fairfax, are the guests of Mr and Mrs O’Donnell, Orepuki.

Mr and Mrs A. S. Holms, of Waimahaka, have returned from a visit to Great Britain.

Mrs S. Tokay, of Tuatapere, spent a few days with her daughter, Mrs J. J. Dolan, Islington street, recently. Mrs W. McGregor, Orepuki, is spending a holiday at Edendale, where she is the guest of Mrs Hickey. Mrs H. W. Kirkby, Tauranga, entertained a number of friends at tennis at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon Miss Irene Emerson, of Thornbury, was the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Emerson, Rimu, for the weekend.

Mrs D. Mason, the Esplanade, East Gore, accompanied by her sister, Mrs A. Porter, left yesterday morning to spend a short holiday in Timaru. Last evening the Play-Reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club concluded its activities for the season when the annual meeting was held. The annual report and balance-sheet, showing a successful year financially as well as socially, were adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: Chairwoman, Mrs A. Owen-Johnston; committee, Mesdames Stanley Brown and G. H. Uttley (re-elected); and Mesdames R. C. Barnett and E. H. J. Preston and Miss Nancy Nicholson; circle representative, Mrs T. F. Gilkison. The evening was concluded with the reading of “Pygmalion and Galatea,” by W. S. Gilbert, with the following cast: Cynisca, Miss P. Sutton; Pygmalion, Mrs E. H. J. Preston; Leucippus and Agnesmos, Miss Mary Thomson; Mimos and Daphne, Miss M. Owen; Galatea, Miss F. Watts; Chrysos, Miss M. Casey; Myrine, Mrs G. R. Milward; chorus, Mrs H. R. Kingsland. Misses M. L. Cowan and E. Watts were in charge of the supper arrangements. An enjoyable fancy dress parade for children followed by a short dance was held in Edendale public hall on Saturday evening in aid of funds for a new Roman Catholic Church at Edendale. A large and varied number of costumes—some of them clever and original—was paraded before the judges, Mesdames William Irvine and T. Morris and Mi- J. O’Neill, who awarded prizes to the following children: E. Phelan and D. McLean (Siamese twins), M. Tither (golliwog), T. Phelan ("Eat More Fruit”), M. Phelan (“Love Lost”) and P. Robertson (Hawaiian). At intervals items were given by Martha Caldwell (recitation), Danny Tither (recitation), Edna Phelan (vocal solo) and Rona Waddell (recitation). After the presentation of the prizes for the costumes, the children were given a pleasant surprise when Mr and Mrs "Santa Claus” walked in unannounced and presented each child with a cake of chocolate and a balloon. A dance followed the dress parade, music being supplied by Messrs J. Halliday, jun., F. Flannery and F. McDonald. Mr J. O’Neill was master of ceremonies.

Miss K. McClean, who has been on the staff at the Menzies Ferry school for the past three and a-half years, was farewelled by a large gathering of district residents in the Menzies Ferry public hall. Miss McClean has been transferred on promotion to Waianiwa. The function took the form of a social and dance and Mr W. Brown contributed the dance music, while Messrs J. C. Fraser and J. H. Henderson were masters of ceremonies. A short programme was presented as follows: Pianoforte duet, Doris and Betty Caldwell; vocal solos, Miss L. Ross, Mrs D. E. Caldwell, Miss M. Walsh and Mr Roy Evans. Misses M. McLauchlan and J. Henderson acted as accompanistes. Before supper, Mr D. Christie (chairman) on behalf of the residents referred to Miss McClean’s ability as a teacher and also to her sporting and social activities. He asked her to accept a gold wristlet watch from the residents. Hazel Crosbie and Jean Erskine presented Miss McClean with bouquets. Mr V. B. Foxon, the other member of the staff, said that during his twelve months’ association with Miss McClean she had given every possible assistance. He paid a tribute to her ability as a teacher and as an organizer of successful concerts and sports. He concluded by congratulating her on her promotion. Mr J. H. Henderson spoke on behalf of the tennis club, and presented Miss McClean with a crystal reading lamp. On behalf of the Basketball Club, Miss Eileen Ross presented Miss McCle.m with a crystal clock. Messrs G. W. Stewart, D. E. Caldwell and A. M. Weir each added a tribute. Miss McClean replied.

The annual dance of the Bluff Old Time Social Club, held in the Town Hall, was well patronized, many visitors from other centres being present. Among the visitors were several residents of Stewart Island. Mr F. W. McDonald was master of ceremonies, while the music was played by Miss M. McLauchlan; Messrs W. J. Grant, E. Bigwood, M. Gillooly and V. C. Durant. The orchestra was assisted by Miss E. Soper who played a number of extras. The committee was reinforced by members of the Bluff Returned Soldiers’ Association, Messrs N. W. McGorlick (president), R. N. Porter and W. Crozier. The profits of the dance were to be devoted to the building fund of the association and at the supper interval Mr McGorlick, on behalf of the association, expressed his thanks to the club for its assistance. The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., apologized for the absence of the Mayor (the Rev. A. E. Waite) and stated that this was the Old Time Social Club’s tenth annual dance, each one of which had been given to help along some worthy cause. The members were deserving of commendation for their services to the community. Mr Doyle presented prizes won at the euchre tournament, held in conjunction with the dance, to

The Social Club Committee was composed of the following: Messrs L. G. Newman (chairman), W. J. Grant (treasurer) and A. McNish (secretary), Mr and Mrs F. W. McDonald, Mrs B. Johnson, Mrs W. Doyle, Mr and Mrs A. E. Budd, Mr and Mrs W. P. Butler, Mr and Mrs G. Fyfe, Mr J. Stalker and Mr C. H. Winter. The committee received valued . assistance from a number of helpers, including Messrs H. H. Moss, A. Nicholson and J. Charleston.
