ROUND WORLD IN 18 DAYS

AMERICAN JOURNALIST WINS RACE ARRIVAL IN NEW YORK ON MONDAY (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) New York, October 19. Mr H. Ekins won the American journalists’ race round the world when he arrived in New York to-day, having circled the globe in 18 days 14hr 56min. Three American journalists, Mr H. Ekins (Scripps-Howard Newspapers), Miss Dorothy Kilgallen (Hearst Newspapers), and Mr Leo Kiernan (North American Newspaper Alliance), left New York on September 30 with the intention of making a trip round the world in less than three weeks, using only regular modes of passenger transportation. They crossed the Atlantic in the German Zeppelin Hindenburg, but through the Zeppelin being four hours late in arriving at Frankfort, they missed their first connection with the air liner which was to take them across Europe. They then separated, using different air routes to Hong Kong. From there they planned to go by steamer to Manila to connect with Pan-American Airways trans-Pacific service. Mr Ekins took off from the Cavite naval base for Guam on October 14, aboard the Hawaii Clipper, en route for Wake and Midway Islands, Honolulu, San Francisco, and New York. Miss Kilgallen and Mr Kiernan were then reported to be aboard the steamer President Pierce, which was expected to be at Manila in time to connect with the China Clipper leaving for Guam October 16.

The China Clipper arrived at Honolulu on Sunday. Mr Kiernan and Miss Kilgallen are among the passengers.
