THE WEATHER RAIN EXPECTED.
(Special io The Times.) Wellington, October 20. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate to strong north-west to westerly winds, backing later to south-west. Weather changeable, and with rain at times and possibly some hail. Temperatures becoming cooler. Seas rather rough to rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather changeable and unsettled, with rain in most districts and some heavy falls probable in western parts from Taranaki southwards, but only light and scattered east of the main ranges. Temperatures mild, but
becoming cooler during to-morrow. General Situation. —A westerly depression has been crossing the Dominion to-day. A secondary depression ■is approaching across the Tasman Sea, but the pressure is now rising over eastern Australia.
Winds—North-easterly at first in'the northern portion of the North Island, but otherwise northerly to northwesterly predominating, backing to westerly and later in places to southwesterly, moderate to strong generally and still of gale force in exposed positions about and south of Cook Strait. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas, elsewhere moderate; eastern Tasman Sea, westerly winds backing later to south-westerlies, moderate in the northern portion, with moderate seas, elsewhere moderate to strong and, in places, of gale force, with rather rough to rough seas.
The weather in Invercargill yesterday was fine and warm, and a northwesterly wind blew. At one o'clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (steady) 29.62 in. Yesterday 29.22 in. Monday 29.42 in.
