PLUNKET SOCIETY
STREET DAY APPEAL. To-day the Invercargill branch of the Plunket Society is holding a street day to supplement its funds. The good work done by the society is widely recognized, but it is probable that few people realize the heavy commitments which the work entails and the limited income of the local branch. At least £5OO is required each year to pay current expenses, which include half the salaries of the four Plunket nurses who are retained in Invercargill. The Karitane Home at. Waikiwi also involves a considerable expense, since many of the mothers who receive treatment there cannot afford to pay for it. The committee which has shouldered the burden of administering the branch has made few appeals to the public. There was no street day last year, but the increasing volume of work—much of it really of a relief nature—has made to-day’s appeal necessary, and the committee is confident that the public will show its appreciation of the service being given by the society in a way that will free it from any financial embarrassment.
