CLUB HOURS

THE MUNICIPAL BATHS SCALE OF PAYMENTS Reference to club hours granted to swimming clubs at the municipal, baths was made by the Baths and Library Committee in its report to the City Council last night. The committee reported having received a letter from the Southland High School Ex-Pupils’ Swimming Club making application for the private session, 5.45 to 6.30 o’clock on Tuesday evening of each week, which had been granted to the club in the past years for a training and coaching period. The letter suggested that this session be a free admission one to club members or prospective members in return for a blanket cover payment for the season. The writer suggested that 25 members be admitted for a payment of £5 for the season of twenty club sessions. “Tlie committee recommends the granting of the private session to the High School Ex-Pupils’ Swimming Club between 5.45 and 6.30 o’clock on Tuesday evenings,” states the report. “It also recommends the adoption of the sliding scale, provided that the other swimming clubs indicate their approval to the baths superintendent. The Town Clerk later reported that the swimming clubs were not unanimous and suggested that the question of charge be further considered by the committee but that the requestfor the club session could be granted.” A supplementary agenda reported that the Town Clerk had again conferred with the baths superintendent yesterday and the position was that the Murihiku Club, having made an early start with the collection of its subscriptions, desired that the present system for this season, at any rate, operate in respect to that club and the baths superintendent recommended accordingly. The following proposed scale of payments was acceptable to the baths superintendent, the Collegiate Club and the Ex-Pupils’ Club, and could be put into operation right away if such was the council’s desire:— Up to 20 members attending, 4/-; between 21 and 24, 4/6; 25, 5/-; between 26 and 29, 5/6; 30, 6/-; between 31 and 34, 6/6, 35, 7/-; between 36 and 39, 7/6; 40, 8/-; between 41 and 49, 8/6; 50, 9/-; between 51 and 59, 9/6; 60 or over, 10/-. J X J The scale of payments was adopted after a short discussion in which councillors debated whether or not club hours meant more or less attendance at the usual open sessions. The general opinion, also put forward by the baths superintendent, it was said, was that such club hours made swimmers more fond of the sport and brought more swimmers in the open hours.
