THE LIBRARY HOURS
EARLIER CLOSING ON SATURDAYS Because of lack of use by subscribers, the Invercargill Public Library will in future close at 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The Baths and Library Committee made a brief report last night to the City Council on the public use of the library on Saturdays, and its recommendations were adopted. The report stated:—“The chief librarian reported that after several months’ trial of keeping the lending library open from 1 to 1.30 p.m. on Saturdays, very few subscribers have availed themselves of the extension the average being three a Saturday. As a result of a tally taken over a period of nine weeks, it is found that an average of eight subscribers changed their books after 8 p.m. on Mondays to Thursdays, while the average on Fridays is about 29. • “The committee recommends (a) that the lending department of the Public Library be closed at 8 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays inclusive, 9 p.m. on Fridays and 1 p.m on Saturdays; and (b) that the juvenile library be closed at 12.30 p.m. on Saturdays instead of 1 p.m.”
Subscriptions For Magazines.
A recommendation that the additional subscription rates for magazines lent by the Public Library be reduced was put to the meeting by the Baths and Library Committee. . ( The committee’s report said: — The chief librarian has reported having received suggestions from subscribers that the additional subscription for magazines be reduced from 10/- to 5/- per annum. The present subscriptions are: Subscribers, 5/-; each additional, 10/-; non- subscribers, 10/- each magazine. The committee recommends that for subscribers to the library, the magazine subscription be 5/- a magazine and that for non-subscribers the subscription for one magazine be 10/-, for each additional magazine 5/-.”
