ENGLISHMEN WIN FIRST MATCH

Innings And 147 Runs DUCKWORTH SLIGHTLY INJURED 9 SIMS IN GOOD FORM WITH BALL (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.35 p.m.) Perth, October 19. The English cricketers won the first match of their tour to-day when they dismissed Western Australia in its second innings for 147 runs, but the team sustained its first casualty. The wicketkeeper, G. Duckworth, in reaching for a ball from K. Fames, the fast bowler, wide on the leg side early in the play, fell, and at the end of the over walked from the field accompanied by the captain, G. O. B. Allen. Duckworth injured the top joint of a finger of his left hand, but an X-ray examination revealed only a slight dislocation, and he returned to the ground after the lunch adjournment. Duckworth will have to rest for a fortnight. In Duckworth’s absence R. E. S. Wyatt was deputy-wicketkeeper for some time to-day, but he gave away so many byes that J. Hardstaff replaced him after lunch. Allen declared at Saturday’s score, preferring to take the game seriously and to strive for a win rather than delay and allow Hardstaff to reach his century. Little more than two hours sufficed to dismiss the Western Australians, who after a splendid opening stand of 96 runs shaped feebly. The English bowling in the early stages was not impressive, but J. M. Sims, a tall slow medium spin bowler, struck a patch and showed good form, although his figures (five wickets for 37 runs) flattered him. Scores:— ENGLAND.
