ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

CHARITY CUP GAMES SOUTHERN BEATS CORINTHIANS In a game full of excitement, but not marked by a particularly high standard of football, Southern on Saturday afternoon defeated Corinthians by one goal in the first round of the Charity Cup Association football competition. At full time the scores were level, 5-all, and as it is a knock-out competition two extra 10-minute spells were played. Neither side was able to score in that time, however, so an additional two five-minute spells were played. Southern was first to goal and the game then ended. < The game was a test of endurance in more ways than one, for the ground at the Showgrounds was very heavy. Southern’s victory came as the result of doggedness rather than good team work. Corinthians had the better combination and in the first half appeared to have every chance of winning. At half-time Southern was three down, but in the second half some brilliant play by McPherson, who was easily the outstanding Southern player, gave the team renewed confidence—and two much-needed goals. Thereafter, Southern functioned better as a team, but the back-line continued to make mistakes. After a somewhat shaky start, H. Pay gave a fine exhibition as goal-keeper for Southern and saved his team time and again. With McPherson he played a big part in Southern’s victory. The teams were:— Southern (black). —H. Pay, Maxwell, McDonald,. Kerr, Hobbs, Ellis, McPherson, C. Pay, Heyricks, Holland, D. Morrison. Corinthians (blue). —Greenfield, John Morrison, James Morrison, L. OR’orke, W. Dymock, W. Reddington, G. Sutherland, Gorrie, N. Morrison, Taylor, M. O’Rorke. The Play. When Southern lined out at full strength those on the side-line looked forward to a good game. But the opening stages were not hopeful for Southern supporters. Corinthians monopolized play for the first five minutes and nearly scored in that time when a shot by Taylor, from well out, went just over the bar. A breakaway by Morrison and C. Pity put Southern on attack, and ended with a corner. Play between Reddington and J. .Morrison made ground and resulted in Morrison beating Pay from close range. Corinthians 1, Southern nil. _ Corinthians kept up the pressure and a centre by Gorrie was fumbled by Pay, and Reddington, who was handy, snapped up the opportunity and goaled. Corinthians 2, Southern nil. The first half-hour’s play was definitely in favour of Corinthians, which had method in its movements. Southern’s play, on the other hand, was very haphazard. With 35 minutes, gone, a great corner by Ellis ended in Kenheading into thp goal. Greenfield was left standing. Corinthians 2, Southern !•

Good work by Morrison, Dymock and Reddington resulted in Reddington centring to John Morrison, who scored a fine goal. Corinthians 3, Southern 1. From the kick-off the ball went from Kerr to Morrison, who made ground and centred for C. Pay, who beat Greenfield from close range. Corinthians 3, Southern 2. A corner taken by Gorrie resulted in J. Morrison scoring through a bunch of players. Corinthians 4, Southern 2. Two minutes later a misunderstanding in the Southern backs let in G. Sutherland, who scored a “gift” goal. Corinthians 5, Southern 2. Half-time sounded soon afterwards. Southern’s Lack of Cohesion. Southern opened the second half with more sparkle, but its movements still lacked cohesion. There were several brisk movements before a melee .in front of the Corinthians’ goal resulted in Holland scoring. Morrison shot and Greenfield saved, but dropped the ball and Holland kicked it into the net. Corinthians 5, Southern 3. A great break was made by McPherson, who took the ball solo from halfway, outpacing the O’Rorke brothers en route. His efforts were rewarded by a fine goal, which he shot from an acute angle. Corinthians 5, Southern 4.

Another bright piece of play saw Heyricks send the ball out to McPherson on the wing. This player again used his pace to advantage and cut in towards the goal. Then, instead of again passing, he shot for goal—and was successful. Corinthians 5, Southern 5. Just previous to this goal M. O’Rorke had taken the place of Greenfield in goal. Greenfield went to half-back. Some torrid exchanges round the Southern goal brought excitement to the crowd and a fine display of goal-keep-ing by H. Pay was seen. He brought off some splendid saves against several stinging shots from the Corinthian forwards. Southern retaliated for a time, but full time sounded with the scores at 5-all. As a result two extra spells of 10 minutes each way were played. Corinthians held the upper hand for the first extra spell, but owing to Southern’s improved defensive play it could not finish off its movements.. In the second spell fortunes varied, but neither side could goal and the score remained at 5-all. In addition five minutes each way, with corners counting, was then played. A marathon contest was finally brought to a climax with a fine goal by Pay. The game ended with the scores: Southern 6, Corinthians 5. Mr J. Galbraith was referee. JUNIOR MATCHES. The Central-Southern junior game was abandoned after 40 minutes’ play, when the score was one-all. Staples scored for Central and Bell for Southern. The other junior game, Corinthians v. Old Boys, resulted in a win for the former by five goals to three. Corinthians thus retains the Bell Shield. MATAURA DEFEATS CENTRAL. Mataura and Central met on the recreation grounds, Mataura, on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather, the home team winning by 2 goals to nil. The teams were: — Central.—Batchelor, Ferguson, Lee, Harvey, Haney, Walsh, Beal, Brunton, McDougall, Collins, Lumsden. Mataura. —G. Gilchrist, W. Gilchrist, Warden, Billington, Russell, Hardie, H. McKinnon, W. McKinnon, Cullen, Armitage, Giles. Play had been in progress only about fifteen minutes when Hardie made a shot at goal, but the ball rebounded to Cullen who beat the opposing goalie. Mataura 1, Central 0. From the kickoff play was taken to the Mataura area where a corner was conceded, but Mataura cleared and took play to Central’s end. Ferguson, was kept busy, but cleared safely. Mataura was still attacking when another corner was conceded, but the visitors cleared again to take play to Mataura’s half. Brunton broke away but his shot was stopped by the goalie. Central kept up the. attack and Gilchrist had a busy time. Half-time sounded with no further score.

On resuming play the home team again set up an attack, Hardie, H. McKinnon and W. McKinnon combining well. From a melee in front of the goal Hardie again scored. Mataura 2,

Central 0. Central attacked, a nice passing movement by Beal, Brunton and McDougall being broken by Mataura’s backs. The visitors, however, still dominated the play and _ a long pass by Lumsden found Beal in position, but his shot was weak. Breaking away, McKinnon, with Armitage in support, soon had Ferguson busy, but the latter finally cleared. He was supported by Collins, who with a fine solo movement took play to the home side’s territory. Central was now attacking strongly and was awarded a penalty which was taken by McDougall, whose shot was deflected by Gilchrist. At. this stage the game became somewhat ragged, the final whistle sounding with play in Central’s half. Outstanding players for Central were Collins, Batchelor and Ferguson, while W. McKinnon, H. McKinnon and Giles were prominent for the home team.
