AN IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, September 18. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: —

Strong south-west to westerly winds to gales, gradually decreasing. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers, but improving during Saturday. Seas rough, but moderating somewhat The weather in Invercargill yesterday was again cold and unpleasant. A strong westerly wind blew throughout the day and heavy rain showers fell at frequent intervals. At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine, though there was a cold wind from the south-west. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (falling) 29.62 in. Yesterday 29.34 in. Thursday 29.38 in.
