PRIVATE WORK ON SATURDAY

MINISTER ISSUES WARNING. (United Press Association.) Wellington, September 18. Tradesmen who formerly worked five and a-half days a week, but who have been awarded a five-day week of 40 hours, are warned by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) that they must not undertake work at their trade on their own account on Saturdays. Complaints have been made by employers that tradesmen, such as plumbers, are doing this. The Minister expressed a doubt whether the complaints were justified, but indicated that steps would be taken by the Government to prevent anything of the kind. He mentioned that Government servants had been included in the complaints, and said that they would be treated the same as employees in private concerns.
