Cousin Lex is a new writer, but he has a good idea of rhythm, and his verse will improve with practice. Cousin Matty is a consistently good writer, and I am sorry that she will soon be

too old to enter for the competitions. Cousin Isobel has written a very long poem which is almost up to prize standard. Remember that I judge the poems on the standard you have set for yourself. On the whole the poems were very satisfactory, and I am pleased to see that you understand the basic rules of rhythm. 398th. COMPETITION. (15), 44 Cranley street, Dunedin, Mary Lobb A.C. (13), Box 28, Edendale. COMMENTS. Most of the stories this week were descriptions, and there were not very many who really wrote stories. Cousin Jacqueline shows originality, and she has some very good ideas. She must be careful in the use of “so” and “but” at the beginning of a sentence. Cousin Ruth is one of my best prose-writers, and though this is not hei’ best effort, it shows originality. Some cousins were in such a hurry to put their

thoughts on paper that they forgot that a verb is a necessary part of r. sentence. You must study the construction of your sentences more carefully. DRAWING COMPETITION.
